The Vagabond King

By: Rudolf Friml
Premiere: September 21, 1925
Book By: Brian Hooker & Willmarth H. Post
Music By: Rudolf Friml

Friml's works generally contain characters that consist of gallants and princesses that move through fairy-tale complexities of plot. The Vagabond King is no exception.

In this romantic and robust operetta, the swaggering thief François Villon is made king for a day as part of a wager. He rallies beggars and vagabonds to defeat Burgundy, thus redeeming himself and subsequently wins the hand of the royal Katherine de Vaucelles. This vigorously romantic score with captivating marches is more richly colored than Friml's Rose Marie.
